Overview

This webinar is part of socialprotection.org’s 11th anniversary campaign, “The Cost of Not Investing in Social Protection”. The session is co-organised with DCI and J-PAL.

The webinar will highlight the human, social and economic costs of underinvesting in social protection. It will make the case for social protection as a strategic investment in more inclusive and resilient societies, by exploring the cost of not investing in stronger digital social protection delivery systems, drawing on the social protection delivery chain and the Digital Convergence Initiative’s (DCI) work across its 21 core countries.

The session will show what weak or fragmented delivery systems mean in practice for governments and beneficiaries, from outdated registries and manual eligibility processes to payment delays, poor grievance mechanisms, disconnected services.

Participants will learn about:

  • The SP delivery chain and digital capabilities that underpin effective delivery.
  • What weak or fragmented delivery systems cost governments and people—in terms of coverage, time, administrative burden, access, responsiveness and missed opportunities.
  • Examples of how digital interventions can improve delivery across different stages of the delivery chain, drawing on DCI country experience. What existing evidence tells us—and where evidence gaps remain—on the impacts of digitalizing social protection delivery.
